Sushi in the Financial District

Posted by: | Comments (0)

I found a great Sushi place in the Financial District of San Francisco. I think they are only open for lunch.

Sushi Umi has lots of vegetarian choices too!

I think I found my new favorite roll!

The Garden Roll: asparagus tempura, garlic eggplant & avocado $4.95

It’s really, really good! Try it.

Best Burritos in the Bay Area

Posted by: | Comments (2)

Burritos in Mill ValleyI think I have found the best burritos in the world! Indian-Mexican fusion. Avatar’s Punjabi Burritos in Mill Valley is the sister restaurant to Avatar’s restaurant in Sausalito. Avatar Punjabi burritos are my new obsession.

Avatar’s can and will make any dish “Vegan, Vegetarian, Gluten Free, or to your specific taste. No dietary restrictions!”

There is a sign on the outside of the restaurant that tells you how to order. It says, “our basic Punjabi burrito is made with fresh curried garbanzo beans, potatoes, basmati rice, fresh herb salsa, seasonal fruit chutney, carrot pickle, non-fat yoghurt and homemade tamarind sauce. You can add any of the following food items to modify our basic burrito.”

I like a place that makes it easy to figure out what you want. Today I ordered the Curry Chicken burrito. Total cost $8.00. It’s big enough that Celia and I can share one and be satisfied.

This place could be described as a hole in the wall. I’ve walked past Avatar’s a million times and never tried it. Take a lesson from me, don’t hesitate to try a hole in the wall kind of restaurant… sometimes you discover the most amazing food and people.

Avatars is a great place to stop after a hike or bike ride in Mill Valley.

Gather for some good food!

Posted by: | Comments (0)

I keep hearing wonderful things about this restaurant in Berkeley called Gather, but I have yet to try it. I asked my Twitter-friend-turned-real-friend, Cathy Curtis (who seems to be one of Gather’s biggest cheerleaders) to write a review for us. Here is what Cathy has to say about Gather. Now I really want to try it! ~Sally

Gather for some good food in Berkeley!

I realized I was becoming jaded about restaurant dining before Gather arrived on the scene in December of 2009. I wasn’t as excited about eating out as I used to be. But with Gather, I eagerly anticipate the meal and the experience, no matter how many times I dine there. Each time it’s like opening a delightful gift that you didn’t expect. From the happy smiles on fellow diner’s faces, it’s obvious that many feel the same way.

First of all, it’s the creative and inventive menu so artfully put together by the chef, Sean Baker. He has turned once neglected vegetables – like kale, parsnips, escarole and beets into dishes that you actually crave! Instead of over-burdening entrees and consequently our digestive systems with too much rich butter, the sauces and dressings are flavorful, added with a light hand, and are made with healthful ingredients such as nuts, mushrooms, nori and tahini.

Three of my favorite dishes are examples of this artful way of cooking. The kale salad is  a mound of  blanched kale, roasted winter root vegetables, thin strips of red onion, lemon juice, oil, toasted pine nuts and a generous portion of grated fiscalini cheese floating on the top like snow.  The escarole salad includes escarole leaves, toasted nori, garlic lemon tahini dressing and breadcrumbs which add just the right amount of “crunch.” But it’s the vegan charcuterie that really shows off the cuisine that is uniquely Gather’s – a smorgasbord of seasonal vegetables diced and sliced and shaped into little islands of flavors – a burst of citrus, smoked maple, smoked parsnip or dill added to heighten the flavors.

Then there are the pizzas. The edges are puffy like clouds but when you take a bite there is that satisfying crunch. The rest of the pie is thin and layered with ingredients that complement and uplift each other. For example, the fuji apple pizza: fontinella cheese, pancetta, sliced apple, and rosemary all covered in a bounty of fresh arugula. Heaven!

This limited sampling of menu items I’ve described could satisfy me for a long time. But the menu holds so much more.  You can eat vegan, vegetarian, gluten-free and also enjoy meat, poultry and fish on any visit to Gather, each prepared with the same attention to detail and flavor. Try the Prather Ranch Burger with caramelized shallot-tomato sauce, the marinated Pt. Reyes mussels or the barbecued young chicken.

The staff at Gather are young, friendly and seem really happy about working there.
At times the service can be a little slow but that is most likely due to a back-up in the kitchen as the crush of orders for pizza or vegan charcuterie overwhelms the system from time to time. If you go there regularly, you start to recognize faces which just adds to the fun.

The décor is as refreshing as the food. Almost everything in the restaurant is made from something recycled like the bench surrounding the perimeter of the restaurant fashioned from pre-worn leather belts, the lighting made from sawed-off vodka bottles and the wall-art created from cardboard packaging materials. I wouldn’t call Gather a cozy restaurant. The ceilings are high and the layout is open. It’s not quiet and subdued. So you may not choose Gather for a romantic tete-a-tete.  It’s much more of a restaurant to relax, enjoy, and well, gather.

Blue Bottle Coffee is The Best!

Posted by: | Comments (0)

Once you go blue you never go back! OMG Blue Bottle Coffee is SO good!

I have been hearing people talk about how great Blue Bottle Coffee is but I had no idea it was this good!

Blue Bottle Coffee, San Francisco
I finally got to try some at the ferry building today. I was lucky enough to be able to sit in the sun and sip my delightful cup of latte with a view of the beautiful San Francisco-Oakland Bay Bridge (who happens to be one of my Twitter friends;-) @SFBayBridge

If you have not tried Blue Bottle Coffee yet… I highly recommend that you do.

Taco Truck in San Francisco

Posted by: | Comments (1)

A few weeks ago, I decided I was officially tired of all the lunch options in the Financial District (known as FiDi to the hip crowd. Not sure if it is pronounced fI-dI or fee-dee? I’m not part of the hip crowd). :-(

The food in the FiDi is all starting to taste the same to me. The lunch restaurants have to produce a LOT of food in a very short period of time. Between 12-1pm every week day, all of the restaurants are processing what seems like hundreds of hungry, in a hurry professionals.

Ideally I would be making enough dinner every night to have leftovers for lunch. As much as I want to do this and know how much better it would be for my health and my budget, I just can’t seem to get my act together!

So…

I put out to my Facebook & Twitter community that I needed suggestions for new food options in the San Francisco Financial District and a few people suggested I try the food trucks. What a great idea!

Kung Fu Tacos

What do you know? The next day Kung Fu Tacos happened to be parked across the street from my office. It was meant to be! I had to try this place! I walked up, got in line with a bunch of guys in suits and said, “what’s good here?”, they told me their favorites and I bounced up and down saying “I’m so excited to try this place!” The men in suits politely smiled at me and probably thought to themselves: “this girl doesn’t get out much”.

I ordered the chicken tacos, they were light, healthy and delicious! The tacos were $2 each.

I’m now on a mission to try all the food trucks/carts that make their way in to the Financial District. If you know of any, please let me know!

Twitter Dancing

Posted by: | Comments (4)

Thanks to @DrMichelleXO‘s wonderful idea, we brought the Marin TweetUp’s to a whole new level of fun.

Last night was the Girl’s Night Out Twitter Dance. Which basically means if you are a girl on Twitter in the local area you were invited.

Eight fabulous women showed up at George’s Night Club in San Rafael around 7:30pm to have a glass of wine and chat before the concert started. (@DrMichelleXO @CurtisFinancial @RebeccaElia @RuthWetherford @HylaMolander @Pobutler @Sally_K @alembic)

George’s Night Club in San Rafael is awesome! It’s been newly remodeled and is a great spot for dancing in Marin.

We were fortunate enough to see Roy Rogers & The Delta Rhythm Kings at George’s. We chatted and danced the night away. (One woman sitting nearby thought we chatted a little too much and little too loud. I think she thought she was a library instead of a night club.) We closed the place down!

Afterward we took a stroll down 4th street in San Rafael and headed to Yet Wah (Classic Chinese Cuisine). Nothing like a big plate of Chow Mein after dancing all night!

Yet Wah closes at midnight, we arrived at 11:50pm. They were nice enough to stay open for us.

I didn’t get a chance to take many pictures from last night because it was too dark, but I did get this video using my iPhone. The band was amazing!!!

Magical Food in San Francisco

Posted by: | Comments (0)

I think I found my favorite restaurant: Unicorn Pan Asian. Wow! This is a special occasion type of restaurant. OMG it is so good!

I’ve been walking by this place everyday and wanting to try it. The decor is amazing. It’s full of beautiful glass art. I have to admit I went here just because I liked the decor and the name, I had no idea what the food was like.

The food was amazing! We ordered the “Sea Course”. It’s $27 a person which seemed like a lot until I saw how much food they brought out and the quality of the food! The “Sea Course” comes with New Zealand Green Lip Mussells in Coconut Wasabi Cream. The Coconut Wasabi Cream is so good I kind of just wanted to drink it.

Next was the Tuna Ceviche with Green Mango, Pickled Lotus Rootlets and Basil.

Ceviche

The Atlantic Salmon with poached Tomato in Penang Baba Curry served with rice.

For dessert we were each invited to pick one thing off of the dessert menu. We chose the Banana BonBons with Cocopine Ice Cream, Raspberry Sauce with Roasted Peanuts. The Ginger Pear poached in Port with Cinnamon-Passion Fruit Sorbet and the Warm Chocolate Torte.

After the delicious Seafood dishes I didn’t think dessert would be able to top it but… I was wrong. The dessert was exquisite! The Ginger Pear poached in Port was like something I’ve never tasted before. The Banana BonBons were crisp and amazing. The Warm Chocolate Torte was top notch chocolate. I was in food heaven that night.

This would be a great date night restaurant. I’m having trouble describing how pretty it was inside and I wasn’t able to capture the ambiance with my iPhone camera.

The name Unicorn is appropriate because the food here is magical.

October Around The Bay

Posted by: | Comments (0)

Is it really already Halloween? Where did October go?

I’ve been so busy I haven’t had time to blog. So here is a little month in review via photos.

The best thing about working in San Francisco is the never ending options of places to eat. I think I could eat at a different restaurant every single day and after a year still not have tried all the restaurants within walking distance to my new office.

View from my office.

One day while waiting for the ferry, a friend and I decided to try Sinbad’s. I’d describe Sinbad’s as a dive bar with an amazing view! It is located right next to the ferry building, on the bay, with a view of the Bay Bridge. Their dining room kind of resembles a green house.

Sinbad's

After Sinbad’s we went to MarketBar which is located at the front of the Ferry Building.

Bruchetta with Salmon

Oysters

After eating those delicious appetizers I took the ferry home. Celia picked me up at the ferry building and drove me to the bus stop where I had left my mini van that morning. When we pulled in to the parking lot I did not see my mini van. I thought someone had stolen it. Celia pulled right behind a brand new Toyota Yaris and said Happy Birthday! She surprised me with a brand new Toyota Yaris! I love my new car! For those of you who remember the Mini saga and are wondering why she didn’t get me the Mini… I changed my mind and decided the Yaris was a much better buy.

Happy Birthday!

For lunch one day I tried one of the little alley way cafes. Cafe Venue is located on Leidesdorf & California Streets. I had a delicious Turkey Cranberry sandwich. It was a chilly San Francisco day but where Cafe Venue is located there was a little warm spot of sunshine and the buildings protected me from the wind.

That afternoon at our daughter’s volley ball game we ran into a nun (Sister Marion) dressed as Elvis. This is a pretty amazing nun.  “In 1983 she qualified for the U.S. Olympic Trials in the marathon, at age 54, by running 2 hours, 51 minutes, 1 second at the California International Marathon in Sacramento. She shattered all major running records in the 50-54, 55-59 and 60-64 age groups, earning a five-year sponsorship by Nike and competing in track events in Australia, Canada, Finland and Switzerland.” -MarinIJ

And this weekend I’ve been taking care of my poor doggy who has a bad hot spot. :-(

Happy Halloween!

Finger Licking Good – BBQ

Posted by: | Comments (0)

Last night I met up with my friend Marilyn (aka @fun_master) at Roadside BBQ in San Rafael. It’s located in the Northgate Mall in Terra Linda.

I don’t know about you, but whenever I see a restaurant in a mall I usually assume it is a big chain restaurant and I’m not that interested in it. I learned Roadside BBQ is not a big chain restaurant. There are 2 locations, this one and another one in San Francisco.

Marilyn has been here before. It’s one of her new favorites so I let her order for me. We shared the pulled chicken sandwich. I think it was this one: “Smoked Free Range Chicken… Slow-cooked and sauced to perfection. Topped w/ avocado, tomato, cilantro, and grilled onions $8.95″ and sweet potato fries. The food was SO yummy and sharing the meal was just the right amount for me. They brought us a 6 pack of BBQ sauces to choose from.

I wish I would have taken pictures. Each table has a roll of environmentally friendly paper towels on it. After I began eating my sandwich I understood why the roll of paper towels was on my table.

Thanks Marilyn for introducing me to a new restaurant!

I did take one picture. I took a picture of the restrooms. Don’t you think it’s kind of strange the girls bathroom has a cow on it and the boys does not? I do.
