I’m talking about a wife as in someone who is there to support you, inspire you and be there for you in sickness and in health.
Women: Don’t you wish you had a wife? Well now you can and you don’t have to be gay to have one!
(But if you are gay, that’s okay too.)
All you have to do is join the online group called A Band of Wives (ABOW) and you are instantly married to a supportive group of wonderful women. Seriously, it is that easy.
A Band of Wives was founded by the amazing Christine Bronstein.
I joined back in February when I discovered them via the Marin Magazine article about online communities that we were both featured in.
At first I didn’t know if this was the right group for me. I was a little intimidated by all the hip, beautiful and successful women. Then I attended a few of their events and realized they were also friendly, genuine, authentic and caring women. You can’t judge a book by it’s cover.
A few weeks ago, I discovered Bistro Burger in San Francisco. I loved their turkey burgers SO much, I went there 3 times that week. They had one of those fishbowls on the counter where you put your business card in for a chance to win a free lunch. I never put my business cards in those things but for some reason I decided to this time. The next day I got an email saying, “Congratulations you won a free lunch for 4 at Bistro Burger”. I was super happy but was wondering who I was going to invite. I didn’t have 3 friends in the financial district who would be available to lunch. This was about the same time I had the realization that my only real complaint about my job was that I really missed those coffee and lunch dates I used to have in Marin with my Twitter friends when I was self employed.
I remembered super-star wife Leila (@mizbohemia), the Director of Operations at A Band of Wives, lived in the city, so I invited her to join me for the free lunch. She agreed.
Then I got the idea to ask on Twitter who works/lives in downtown San Francisco and I got a response from someone who just happened to also be a member of ABOW! Shasta (@girlfrndcircles), owner of GirlFriendCircles.com and I invited her to join us for lunch. She said yes! We had room for one more at lunch so Shasta invited Jessica (@50womenproject), author the 50 Woman Project and she said Yes!
On Friday, we all met at Bistro Burger (in Trinity Alley) and were greeted by John who congratulated us and took our photo. I’m guessing the photo is going to show up on their Website under the Happy Winner section soon. Bistro Burger sells veggie, turkey, chicken and regular hamburgers along with salads so there is something for everyone. And they’re really, really good! You can order your burger without a bun if you’re doing the Sugar Divorce, like I am. They’re also on Twitter at: @BistroBurgerSF
It was a nice day so we sat outside. Our little lunch turned in to a 3 hour magical, brainstorming session. We ended our lunch full of ideas and inspirations for our own various projects. It’s amazing how the power of group intelligence can get you unstuck from a rut. That’s what A Band of Wives is all about; connecting women, and igniting the spark in all of us.
Thank you Twitter, Bistro Burger and A Band of Wives for connecting us!
Here are the 3 dynamic wives I had the pleasure of dining with:
I told you they were all hip, beautiful and successful!
I found a great Sushi place in the Financial District of San Francisco. I think they are only open for lunch.
Sushi Umi has lots of vegetarian choices too!
I think I found my new favorite roll!
The Garden Roll: asparagus tempura, garlic eggplant & avocado $4.95
It’s really, really good! Try it.

I think I have found the best burritos in the world! Indian-Mexican fusion. Avatar’s Punjabi Burritos in Mill Valley is the sister restaurant to Avatar’s restaurant in Sausalito. Avatar Punjabi burritos are my new obsession.
Avatar’s can and will make any dish “Vegan, Vegetarian, Gluten Free, or to your specific taste. No dietary restrictions!”
There is a sign on the outside of the restaurant that tells you how to order. It says, “our basic Punjabi burrito is made with fresh curried garbanzo beans, potatoes, basmati rice, fresh herb salsa, seasonal fruit chutney, carrot pickle, non-fat yoghurt and homemade tamarind sauce. You can add any of the following food items to modify our basic burrito.”
I like a place that makes it easy to figure out what you want. Today I ordered the Curry Chicken burrito. Total cost $8.00. It’s big enough that Celia and I can share one and be satisfied.
This place could be described as a hole in the wall. I’ve walked past Avatar’s a million times and never tried it. Take a lesson from me, don’t hesitate to try a hole in the wall kind of restaurant… sometimes you discover the most amazing food and people.
Avatars is a great place to stop after a hike or bike ride in Mill Valley.

I keep hearing wonderful things about this restaurant in Berkeley called Gather, but I have yet to try it. I asked my Twitter-friend-turned-real-friend, Cathy Curtis (who seems to be one of Gather’s biggest cheerleaders) to write a review for us. Here is what Cathy has to say about Gather. Now I really want to try it! ~Sally
Gather for some good food in Berkeley!
I realized I was becoming jaded about restaurant dining before Gather arrived on the scene in December of 2009. I wasn’t as excited about eating out as I used to be. But with Gather, I eagerly anticipate the meal and the experience, no matter how many times I dine there. Each time it’s like opening a delightful gift that you didn’t expect. From the happy smiles on fellow diner’s faces, it’s obvious that many feel the same way.
First of all, it’s the creative and inventive menu so artfully put together by the chef, Sean Baker. He has turned once neglected vegetables – like kale, parsnips, escarole and beets into dishes that you actually crave! Instead of over-burdening entrees and consequently our digestive systems with too much rich butter, the sauces and dressings are flavorful, added with a light hand, and are made with healthful ingredients such as nuts, mushrooms, nori and tahini.
Three of my favorite dishes are examples of this artful way of cooking. The kale salad is a mound of blanched kale, roasted winter root vegetables, thin strips of red onion, lemon juice, oil, toasted pine nuts and a generous portion of grated fiscalini cheese floating on the top like snow. The escarole salad includes escarole leaves, toasted nori, garlic lemon tahini dressing and breadcrumbs which add just the right amount of “crunch.” But it’s the vegan charcuterie that really shows off the cuisine that is uniquely Gather’s – a smorgasbord of seasonal vegetables diced and sliced and shaped into little islands of flavors – a burst of citrus, smoked maple, smoked parsnip or dill added to heighten the flavors.
Then there are the pizzas. The edges are puffy like clouds but when you take a bite there is that satisfying crunch. The rest of the pie is thin and layered with ingredients that complement and uplift each other. For example, the fuji apple pizza: fontinella cheese, pancetta, sliced apple, and rosemary all covered in a bounty of fresh arugula. Heaven!
This limited sampling of menu items I’ve described could satisfy me for a long time. But the menu holds so much more. You can eat vegan, vegetarian, gluten-free and also enjoy meat, poultry and fish on any visit to Gather, each prepared with the same attention to detail and flavor. Try the Prather Ranch Burger with caramelized shallot-tomato sauce, the marinated Pt. Reyes mussels or the barbecued young chicken.
The staff at Gather are young, friendly and seem really happy about working there.
At times the service can be a little slow but that is most likely due to a back-up in the kitchen as the crush of orders for pizza or vegan charcuterie overwhelms the system from time to time. If you go there regularly, you start to recognize faces which just adds to the fun.
The décor is as refreshing as the food. Almost everything in the restaurant is made from something recycled like the bench surrounding the perimeter of the restaurant fashioned from pre-worn leather belts, the lighting made from sawed-off vodka bottles and the wall-art created from cardboard packaging materials. I wouldn’t call Gather a cozy restaurant. The ceilings are high and the layout is open. It’s not quiet and subdued. So you may not choose Gather for a romantic tete-a-tete. It’s much more of a restaurant to relax, enjoy, and well, gather.

It’s one of those rare hot weeks in the Bay Area. It’s actually 90° in my house right now. For Wordless Wednesday I thought I’d share a great summer salad recipe with you. I know I’m not exactly being Wordless but this salad is too delicious to not talk about.
The original recipe is from epicurious.com but I tweaked it a bit (thanks to advice from my friends at rel.ish catering). I added Orange Muscat Champagne Vinegar from Trader Joe’s and feta cheese. If you don’t have the orange vinegar you can add a splash of orange juice to get the sweet flavor.
Enjoy. Be sure to let the quinoa cool in the fridge for 2 hours before adding the other ingredients. I got impatient once and threw it all together while the quinoa was still hot and ended up with a big bowl of mush, still tasty but not as pretty. I prefer to use golden beets, if you use red beets the whole salad turns red.

If you are looking for some good, fast, healthy food to eat in San Francisco then Urban Picnic is the place to go. They offer healthy, organic, local, sustainable food and they have it ready fast! Celia went there a few months ago and was very impressed. She told me she got her healthy lunch in under 5 minutes for under $15. She insisted I try it. So a few weeks ago when we had a meeting nearby we went to Urban Picnic. It was great! They are located near the Sutter/Stockton Garage.
Urban Picnic is a hip and modern place. You can order your food to go or stay awhile and use their free wi-fi.
I just read on their Website that they are also very green. Pretty cool stuff!
Where financially possible, green design and practice were in mind.
- Paint - low VOC (volatile organic compounds) paint
- Furniture - communal bar table designed using reclaimed Douglas Fir wood – reuses existing resources.
- Lighting - CFL and LED lighting – CFL lighting alone uses 75% less energy than incandescent lighting.
- Equipment - where possible, energy star rated equipment, reduces green house gas emissions.
- Restroom Hand Warmer - eliminates paper consumption
- Restroom Light Auto Sensor – efficiently conserves energy consumption
- Restroom Water Faucet Auto Sensor - efficiently controls water consumption

We had the Tempeh Spring Rolls for $6.95 (the best freshest tasting spring rolls we’ve ever eaten!)
We also had the Kale & Quinoa salad. Yummy and Fresh!
“It was a relief to find this super healthy place fast and affordable in the middle of junk food outlets and very expensive restaurants of the financial district. This place is really close to the Union Square. Perfect for having lunch during a work day or on a shopping day.” – Celia

Yesterday I took my friend to Café del Soul in Tam Junction (Mill Valley). They have the best food! Their dishes are organic, fresh and healthy. They have vegan options for all of their dishes and their motto is their food is prepared with love. I often go here for a quick lunch.

My favorite dish is the Curry Don’t Stop wrap consisting of organic brown rice, tofu, dried cranberries, spinach, almonds with a mustard curry dressing, served in a whole wheat tortilla. I also love their ginger limeade.

My friend ordered the carrot ginger soup and a mini Sun Salutation wrap which includes red leaf lettuce, cheddar cheese, tomato, avocado, and onion tossed in a citrus cummin dressing, and served in a whole wheat tortilla.

Café del Soul has free wireless and a very relaxing and welcoming atmosphere. They have a big purple chair that I love to just sit in. I wish I would have taken a picture of the big, comfy, purple chair. Café del Soul is a great place to meet with people. The décor is beautiful and calming. The people who work there are super nice.

Last night I went to the fondue restaurant in Larkspur called the Melting Pot. I was there for a fund raiser with Estee Lauder for Breast Cancer Awareness. They were serving a four course fondue meal for $36 a person. Six of those dollars went to the charity. The food was excellent. The ambiance at the Melting Pot is pretty cool too! It’s located in an old brick kiln.
We started out with some fabulous pink cocktails and then they brought the first course: Amazing Alp and Dell Cheese Fondue; Reisling wine, whole grain mustard and nutmeg with a blend of Gruyere, Raclette, and Fontinia Cheeses. YUMMY! We were given bread and apple to dip in to this fabulous mixture.
The next course was a fresh mixed green salad. Next was a plate of mixed meats roasted garlic crusted chicken, Hefeweizen marinated shrimp (my favorite) and sun dried tomato ravioli along with a plate of vegetables. They also had a vegetarian plate with ravioli and vegetables.
The last course was incredible! I’m not a big dessert person and I actually wasn’t even going to try it but I’m so glad I did! The dessert was White Chocolate Apple Cobbler Fondue that came with a plate for of mini desserts to dip in to the fondue.
This four course meal is normally $40 a person but they have monthly Girls’ Night Out where the meal is either $30 or $36 if it is for a charity event.
I’d definitely come back here.

One of the best kept secrets in the Bay Area is the town of Bolinas. Bolinas is known as the place that is not easy to find. For years local residents have been taking down the road sign pointing toward Bolinas from Hwy 1.
The weekend I stayed at Stinson Beach we decided to go on adventure and go out to eat in Bolinas, which I think is about a 10 minute drive from Stinson.
Bolinas has been described to me in many different ways such as a “hippie town”, a “bunch of farmers”, a “funky beach town” or “a small-unique nothing you have seen before town”. I would describe Bolinas as a friendly town.
When we arrived at the Coast Café we were immediately greeted as we entered the restaurant. The décor was surfer style with surf boards hanging from the ceiling. We were seated at the end of a very long wooden table.
I’m not sure how it happened but I brushed my hand across the bottom of the big table. I noticed there was carpet attached to the bottom of the table. We asked the waiter what the carpet was for. He looked under the table and said, “I really don’t know why there is carpet attached to the bottom of this table” and walked away. He quickly returned with one of the owners of the restaurant. The owner, David sat down at our table to tell us the story about the carpet under the table.
It seems the sound in this restaurant with hardwood floors, wood tables and wood chairs used to be very loud. They discovered by adding carpet underneath the tables & chairs it made a huge difference in the sound quality and the ambiance of the restaurant.
David was a cool guy! In addition to running the restaurant (I didn’t get the name of the other owner but I think there were two) David is also a plumber, oyster-shucker and the captain of a fishing vessel. It even says so on his business card.
For dinner I had the “Gardener’s Pie” made with organic vegetables, vegan gravy and topped with mashed potatoes. OMG this was Amazing! Delicious! and Yummy!
Oh, I almost forgot to mention. Their breakfast bran muffins are THE BEST MUFFINS on the planet. Amy had told David how much she enjoyed them so he sent us home with one for breakfast the next morning. Thank goodness Amy was generous enough to share with me. Yummy! I’d drive back to Bolinas just for those muffins.
