Please do NOT endorse me on LinkedIn

Posted by: | Comments (4)

Please do not endorse me on LinkedIn, unless you have actually worked with me or seen me do one of the skills you are considering endorsing.

I do not like LinkedIn endorsements. It’s silly. I have strangers endorsing me for things all the time.  I have had friends endorse me for bookkeeping, friends who have never ever seen my bookkeeping work. Why people? Why would you do this? What if I am a terrible bookkeeper?

Just because LinkedIn suggests you endorse someone for something does not mean you should. It defeats the whole purpose! If someone endorses you for something please do not feel obligated to return the favor.

Tip #13: Ignore the “Skills & Expertise” endorsement feature on LinkedIn.

How to manage my Facebook business page

Posted by: | Comments (2)

facebook-likeDo you have a Facebook page for your business? If not, why not?

Are you having trouble figuring out how to post to your business page and not to your personal profile? In working with clients, I have found many people do not know how to get to their page or how to post to it.

Tip #11: Learn how to manage your Facebook business page.

From your computer, log on to your personal profile at Facebook.com.

To use Facebook as your business page and not as yourself. Ie. in my case to use Facebook as Sally Around The Bay instead of as myself Sally Kuhlman.

After logging in to Facebook, look to the top right side of your screen for the small image of a gear.

Post as my Facebook page

Click on that gear and you will see a drop down menu that says:

Use Facebook as:

Click on the page you want to use Facebook as. Now when you post or “like” something you will be doing it as your business and not as yourself.

If you just want to view your page, look to the left side of the screen you will see the following:

Favorites
Groups
Pages

where is my facebook page

Under Pages click on your page. This will bring you to your page but you will still be using Facebook as you.

If you are wondering if you are logged on as You or as Your Business Page you can tell by looking at the top right corner and see which avatar is showing. In the image below I can tell I am using Facebook as Sally Around The Bay and not as my personal profile because I see my avatar and it says Sally Around The Bay.

Yelp negative reviewBeing a Virtual Assistant who specializes in social media, I have gotten some strange requests from people.

Business owners often contact me wanting to know how to take down a bad review on Yelp! about their business or service. More than once I have had business owner’s ask if they can hire (pay) me to write fake positive reviews for their business.

My response: Um, no.

Them: But I have a negative review on Yelp! and it is going to hurt my business.

My suggestion:  Usually negative reviews are there for a reason: either the reviewer or your staff may have been having a bad day and things just did not go right. If you have many negative reviews, you may want to read the reviews and see if you find a common complaint and then take a good look at your business practices and see if any changes can be made to improve customer satisfaction.

Respond to the negative review as soon as possible. Apologize to the disgruntled customer and do what you can to remedy the situation. Other customers will see your response and will appreciate that you took ownership.

The best way to get rid of negative reviews is to offer awesome service and fill your review page with legitimate happy customers writing positive reviews so that one negative one gets bumped down in importance. If a customer is raving about your business you can politely ask them to write a review on Yelp!

Tip # 10: Don’t be afraid to address negative reviews online. Use them as an opportunity to show you care about your customers.

Too Many Ads on Facebook

Posted by: | Comments (0)

zen gardenAre you feeling overwhelmed with social media?

Are the ads, sponsored posts and suggested pages in your Facebook timeline driving you crazy?

Today is Theme Day at the WordCount Blogathon. The theme assignment was to list your 5 favorite apps, plugins, widgets, etc… I will be listing 1.

I recently discovered an extension for the Chrome browser that will take the ads out of your Facebook completely! Thank you Sherra Scott and Terry Green for telling me about this add-on.

Imagine the right column of Facebook just being white, no ads, no clutter. It’s so much more relaxing on the eyes to look at Facebook now. No more confusing sponsored posts and suggested pages sprinkled in to your timeline.  The add-on is called “AdBlock”. It even takes the ads out of Google searches! It makes surfing the Internet a more Zen experience.

Downside: Limits your browser use to Chrome if you want an ad-free experience. Still doesn’t solve the issue of ads showing up in your Facebook timeline on your smartphone.

Tip #5: Check out AdBlock for Google Chrome.

Life on LinkedIn

Posted by: | Comments (3)

LinkedIn is a social networking site used for professional networking. LinkedIn was created to be a place to connect with all the people in your professional network that you know or have worked with. It was also supposed to be a way to see who your 6 degrees of separation business connections were, which could be useful to get introductions to people in your field.

LinkedIn has turned in to a business mixer type of place, kind of like a Chamber of Commerce cocktail party. You can join groups on LinkedIn and participate in discussions related to your profession or interest. LinkedIn is a great way to make new contacts as well as connect with past ones. I’m fine with this evolution of LinkedIn. However, not everyone respects the original mission of LinkedIn.

What I don’t like is the people on LinkedIn who have forgotten about common courtesy when networking. If you were at an in person networking event would you walk up to a stranger and say. “BUY THIS PRODUCT THAT I AM SELLING NOW”? I hope not. Would you walk up to a stranger and hand them your business card before even introducing yourself to them? I hope not. Why do people feel it is okay to behave that way online?

I constantly get invitations to connect on LinkedIn from total strangers. They don’t introduce them self, in fact, they don’t even say hi. They just send me a request to connect. Why?

Tip #4: Introduce yourself when inviting someone to connect on LinkedIn. Say hello. Tell the person where you found them and why you are interested in connecting.

Don’t be this guy:

Tiny Choices

Posted by: | Comments (6)

Sevilla, SpainBeing in Europe for the past few weeks has forced me to reevaluate my relationship with the Internet. I’m realizing the Internet and I have been spending way too much time together.

I love the Internet, it has been a great companion, it has been there for me through the ups and downs but I need some space!

Since the Internet and I got married (the day I got my first iPhone) things have changed. My attention span has been reduced to reading only 140 characters and viewing images. I hardly pick up books anymore. I don’t read or write as many blog posts as I used to. I get distracted easily.  My imagination and creativity have been squished by an overload of information fed to me 24 hours a day in the palm of my hand.

I’m not sure how to make the changes yet but I need my space. The Internet and I are going on a trial separation, we are not totally breaking up but are taking our relationship down a notch. We’re going to be just friends from now on. We will still communicate on a regular basis but not 24/7 like we have been for the last 5 or so years.

Since I have only had very limited access to the Internet while traveling I have literally felt my brain cells waking up and my creativity sparking. I have also been reading more books.

It is all about the tiny choices we make each moment of the day. I am going to start being more conscious of my tiny choices and see where that brings me.  One of those choices is how much time I will spend on the Internet. Who knows maybe I will finally finish the book I have been working on for the last year.

Edited to add this video my Twitter friends @alembic and @iamprettymaxine shared with me after reading this post. The Internet: A Warning from History. Oh the irony of watching this video in Spain, tuning out mi familia, while waiting for the video to buffer…

san-francisco-prideThis whole Supreme Court hearing about Prop 8 and DOMA has left me feeling raw. I only listened to snippets of the hearings because the discussion upsets me so much.

I almost lost it with a representative from Chase bank today. I called to let them know I will be traveling out of the country in April and wanted to make sure they knew so we could use our ATM cards while we are out of the country. They would only let me notify for my ATM card, not Celia’s even though we are on the same account and married. I said, “Do you make every married couple call in separately to put a note on their accounts when traveling?” The mans voice started shaking and he said yes they did and he just went through this with a man and woman who were married and had to talk to each of them separately. At this point is when I realized I am feeling a little sensitive with MY marriage being discussed in the Supreme Court.

Yesterday, I did a speech at Toastmasters titled: I Have Trouble Answering Simple Questions. By simple questions, I mean questions like: Are you married? My voice trembled through the whole speech. I was mad at myself for not being able to hold my composure while speaking in front of a small group of people. Then I remembered the interview Oprah did with Ellen back in 1997 and I remembered Ellen’s voice was trembling when she spoke.

Then later in the day I spoke with a reporter from the MarinIJ about my opinion of the case. I tried to stay positive because I do appreciate how far we have come since I first came out of the closet in 1995 (2 years before Ellen!) but I am tired of waiting. I realize we are at the tipping point and this battle is almost over but I am SO tired of hearing the hurtful comments from religious leaders, politicians and the masses in general.

Can we just get over it and move on? Imagine if all those religious and political leaders who put so much money, time and energy in to trying stop people like me from getting married, would have instead put that money, time and energy in to helping people get out of poverty, feeding hungry people, and offering love instead of judgment and hurt?

I don’t believe all people who were or are against same-sex marriage are bad, ignorant or mean. I have friends and family who voted for Prop 8 and believe marriage is between a man and a woman but at the same time they love and support my relationship with Celia. I do believe there has been a big mix of church and state and that is not how it is supposed to work.  There is supposed to be a separation of church and state.

I believe in change.  I believe the majority of people here in the US will soon understand that marriage equality is a civil rights issue and not a religious one.

Seeing most of my Facebook timeline turn red yesterday with support of marriage equality, I was moved. I even saw some of the red equal signs on profiles of people from the conservative Lutheran church I grew up in. This gives me hope.

Equal Love

More things that gives me hope:

This blog post written by a self proclaimed Bible thumping Christian woman: Marriage Equality: I Can’t Be Switzerland Anymore

and, “The Hopmonk Tavern in Novato has booked a “Comedy for Equality” show to replace an appearance by singer Michelle Shocked, whose scheduled show there was canceled by owner Dean Biersch after her recent anti-gay rant in San Francisco.” – Novato’s HopMonk replaces Michelle Shocked with ‘Comedy for Equality

The biggest mistake businesses make on Twitter is: ignorance – not knowing about checking their @ messages.

TwitterBirdDear Businesses on Twitter,

You may be ignoring your customers and potential customers and not even be aware of it! I see this happen all the time!

Tip: Check your @ messages daily.

What is an @ message? An @ message is when someone is talking to or about YOU on Twitter.

Imagine you are a business with a product. A product you want to sell more of. Now imagine you have an unhappy customer and this customer is talking all sorts of nonsense about your product on Twitter and all their friends join in the conversations. Within minutes there could be hundreds or even thousands of negative posts about your product! And you could be completely unaware of all this. If you, as a business would have responded to the original tweet apologizing, and offering to make good on the product issue the whole situation of a bunch of bad PR very likely would have been avoided.

Now imagine your customers absolutely love your product. They say good things about your company and your product regularly on Twitter. After awhile they notice you are ignoring their tweets and never thanking them for their praise. They may get their feelings hurt and no longer want to shout your praises.

As a business it is important to be in the conversation. This is true across all the social media platforms but if you are on Twitter let’s start with this one simple step. Check your @ messages regularly. Here is how:

Log on to Twitter.com. Along the very top you will see a menu that says: Home | @ Connect | # Discover | Me

Click on the @ Connect

This is where you see all the mentions of you!

@ messages

Now reply to the individual tweets mentioning your business or product. (When you hover over the tweet, there is a little reply button to click on so you can reply to person who sent the tweet.)

Thank you,

@Sally_K

If you take a walk around Marin County today you will likely see phone books, covered in plastic, laying around the street, floating in gutters. I just did.

Instead of just walking straight to the recycling bin with my phone book, I decided to take the time to figure out how to opt out of receiving this dinosaur in the future.

I have to say Marin County Valley YellowPages is making an effort to be more environmental and they do offer an opt out Website address right on the front cover, however, I’d rather an opt in effort than and opt out but hey it’s a start.

phone book

10 not so simple steps to opt out of the Yellow Pages that have been delivered directly to your gutter without asking:

  1. Go to: www.yellowpagesoptout.com
  2. Enter your Zip code
  3. Fill out the form. (Not so pleased it is required to ‘register’ before opting out). Provide them with your full name, email, telephone number and home address.
  4. Log in to email to receive password and further instructions.
  5. Follow instructions in email back to Website to log in with your new random password. Log in.
  6. Click on blue button which reads, “Make Selections Now”.
  7. Adjust the quantity for each book offered to you to “none”
  8. Click on Save Changes button.
  9. Read opt out agreement and check box next to this statement: I have read and understand the above disclaimer.
  10. Click Confirm button.
