People Can Evolve

Here’s a thought… I believe people can evolve and we need to give them the space to do so.

Not so long ago Obama supported “civil unions” and civil rights for gays and lesbians and insisted that marriage was not a basic civil right. [2004]

In 2006 Obama wrote, “I was reminded that it is my obligation, not only as an elected official in a pluralistic society but also as a Christian, to remain open to the possibility that my unwillingness to support gay marriage is misguided … that Jesus’ call to love one another might demand a different conclusion.”

In 2012, Obama became the first president to support same-sex marriage.

Took him long enough in my humble opinion but the point of this post is people make mistakes, are ignorant, unaware, may truly feel conflicted with their own personal religious beliefs or what their religious leaders are telling them but it doesn’t mean they are bad people. We need to start differentiating between bad behavior and bad people. Our country is too polarized. People can evolve. People can change. People can open their hearts. People can apologize. People can be forgiven. And, people can forgive! Yes we can!

We need to give people the room to grow and change.

I like what Justin Michael Williams said on Instagram the other day. Let’s start calling people forward instead of calling them out. You can listen to his own words here.

Here’s to calling people forward and Obama evolving!

Happy #PrideMonth2020
